This week we are creating superhero masks. Pupils will color in the masks using their favourite colours and then add a sprinkling of glitter for drama.
This is a quick flick through some of the art work we have been doing in FS this year. I have really enjoyed working with this age group and have been really impressed at how quickly they have developed their skills.
For our kings and queens portrait, start by cutting crowns from gold paper. Then draw a half circle with black marker underneath the crown. Add face details with marker. Color in with crayons and add some sparkle with glitter.
Foundation Stage has moved on to look at classic stories. We decided to create our own giant beanstalk. Influenced by Eric Carles illustrations we set about creating our mixed media leaves, each station contained different medias and students loved making creative decisions about what to use within their leaves.
Each lesson we like to recap the learning and talk about our art work. This was a lesson we did for our arts night. Students created a painted background that they covered with bottle top printed circles. They then decorated a heart that they cut out to stick over the top. I am always really impressed with how well students can describe what they have been doing. Even at this young age. Well done girls.
This lesson was so much fun. I split the groups up and drew around one student in each group doing a Keith Haring pose. They then then worked in their groups to paint shapes and patterns around the edge creating a sense of movement to the art work. Students loved the final designs from these lessons and as a teacher watching them spread out on the floor painting was great.
Team Teaching in FS2 Specialist Art Classes
In order to ensure our younger pupils have the best start to their education, Gems Metropole School has introduced team teaching into the specialist art classes for FS2. This means that during a lesson, two art teachers and a teaching assistant will be working together to guarantee that all pupil needs are met.
The unit plans for the art classes follow themes as outlined by the Foundation Stage team, and are taught with emphasis on the Early Years Foundation Stage program. All five of our specialist art teachers are involved in the planning process so that we can make lessons as interesting and fun as possible.
Having two specialist teachers in a classroom means that there is double the expertise with mediums and techniques. Thus, this allows us to use messy mediums, such as clay and plaster, with FS2 children in a safe and controlled manner. Overall, this team teaching initiative will benefit all FS2 children and will provide an opportunity for the children to thrive.
